A veteran from the Rhondda said that his main concern was the need for mental health support. He suffered from depression and was not getting any help from mental health staff. He felt that veterans were being removed from benefit lists without proper recognition of their disabilities, and felt that the Dept of Work and Pensions were failing a lot of people. There were concerns about how mental health assessments were carried out.
Another veteran complained that he was frustrated with needless repetitions of demands for basic information at the Job Centre he had attended. One veteran remarked that 'they insist on endless duplication of information and deny help to fill out forms'. That it needed to be recognised the current welfare process could be stressful and may make existing conditions such as post traumatic stress disorder and depression worse.
Questionnaires were returned at the end of this meeting.
The comments from these showed that the meeting was of great interest, but that there needs to be a more comprehensive was of getting information to veterans and to those organisations who purpose it is to provide services to them.
